Curriculum for Excellence

The curriculum at Yarrow Primary School is based on Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland and aims to achieve a transformation in education in Scotland by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum from 3 to 18. This is what we strive for at Yarrow Primary.

The purpose of the curriculum is to help every learner develop knowledge, skills and attributes for learning, life and work which are encapsulated in the four capacities - to enable each child or young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an effective contributor. For further information you can log on to www.ltscotland.org.uk.

Our curriculum is designed on the basis of the following principles:

·         Challenge and enjoyment

·         Breadth

·         Progression

·         Depth

·         Personalisation and choice

·         Coherence

·         Relevance

We aim to provide a broad and balanced education for all pupils, taking account of the individual needs of each child.

Programmes of work are developed by staff to suit the interests and particular needs of our pupils at Ettrick Primary.  These programmes form the basis of our classroom planning, teaching and assessment to ensure that pupils gain breadth in the curriculum, are challenged and have opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in different contexts.

Collaborative Learning

We are proud of the links that we have with our partner schools, Ettrick and Kirkhope Primaries.  We maintain this close relationship through a carefully planned programme of collaborative working throughout the year.  This includes Collaborative Learning Days whereby pupils and staff come together at the host school (Ettrick/Kirkhope/Yarrow ) for a day of theme-based, cross-curricular activities.  This allows pupils to work with others at the same stage as well as working as part of a larger group.  This is very popular with pupils!
